Celebrate Halloween with this delightfully spooky Haunted Graveyard Skeleton Cake, featuring moist chocolate layers and creamy buttercream frosting, adorned with eerie skeleton decorations.

Ingredients

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup softened butter
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup dark cocoa powder
  • 1-2 cups crushed cookies (like Oreos) for crumb soil
  • Skeleton decorations (candy or edible figures)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven according to the package instructions for the chocolate cake mix. Prepare your cake pans by greasing and lightly flouring them.
  2. Mix the chocolate cake mix, eggs, water, and vegetable oil until smooth and well-blended.
  3. Pour the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake as directed, usually around 30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  4. Make the buttercream by beating the softened butter, powdered sugar, and heavy cream together until creamy and fluffy.
  5. Layer the cakes by frosting the top of one layer, placing the second layer on top, and frosting the entire cake.
  6. Create the cookie crumb ‘soil’ and sprinkle it around the base of the cake.
  7. Decorate with skeleton candies or edible figures, placing them in the cookie crumb soil for a spooky effect.
  8. Serve at your Halloween gathering and enjoy the compliments!

Notes

Ensure cakes are completely cool before frosting to avoid melting the buttercream. Consider adding a chocolate ganache layer for extra decoration.
